Does Buckwheat Contain Gluten?

From time to time, we get asked about buckwheat and if it contains gluten. Don’t be fooled by buckWHEAT’s name. It does not contain gluten.
Buckwheat is not considered a grain but a "pseudocereal". It is a flowering plant, related to leafy vegetables like rhubarb and sorrel. Its fibrous seeds are packed with glorious plant protein! Gluten-free plant-based athletes love to incorporate this superfood into their lifestyle, because per cup you get 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber!.
However, if you are gluten intolerant always read your labels! Some places still share milling equipment, and buckwheat is often a rotation crop with wheat and rye (which contain high amounts of gluten). For your information - Bob Red Mills (like our bakery) has a certified gluten-free factory for their gluten-free products and they have fantastic options for their buckwheat products!
Some great health benefits of buckwheat are:
- Improved energy (because it’s so easy to digest)
- Better skin tone
- Improved digestion
- Low glycemic food
- Rich in antioxidants
If you are still concerned about buckwheat, the NCA (National Celiac Association) has great information.
Here’s to a wonderful and healthful New Year!
