From time to time, we get asked about buckwheat and if it contains gluten. Don’t be fooled by buckWHEAT’s name. It does not contain gluten.
Buckwheat is not considered a grain but a “pseudocereal”. It is a flowering plant, related to leafy vegetables like rhubarb and sorrel. Its fibrous seeds are packed with glorious plant protein! Gluten-free plant-based athletes love to incorporate this superfood into their lifestyle, because per cup you get 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber!.
However, if you are gluten intolerant always read your labels! Some places still share milling equipment, and buckwheat is often a rotation crop with wheat and rye (which contain high amounts of gluten). For your information – Bob Red Mills (like our bakery) has a certified gluten-free factory for their gluten-free products and they have fantastic options for their buckwheat products!
Some great health benefits of buckwheat are:
- Improved energy (because it’s so easy to digest)
- Better skin tone
- Improved digestion
- Low glycemic food
- Rich in antioxidants
If you are still concerned about buckwheat, the NCA (National Celiac Association) has great information.
Here’s to a wonderful and healthful New Year!
